Old wall tiles can really date an installation. They may be cracking or broken, or they may be an outdated color. In any case, if you want to update the look of the room where they are installed, the first step is removing them.

Old wall tiles have likely been installed in one of two ways: either tiled into a mortar bed, or placed directly on drywall. Depending on which of these methods was used and where in the home the tiles are installed, the entire wall may need to come down with the tile. Put on safety goggles and work gloves, and cover up the floor and any fixtures below the wall where the tile is located. Tile can produce a lot of dust and jagged shards when it is broken up; take precautions to stay safe and make cleanup easier.

Use a hammer and chisel to break up a few tiles into pieces so you can see what is behind them. Hold the chisel at a degree angle to the tiles as you hit it with the hammer to break the tile off of its foundation. You may find drywall or a thick mortar bed, depending on the age of the tiles. Break up a wall tiled in mortar into manageable pieces, using a sledgehammer to break the tiles and mortar from top to bottom on the tiled wall. Use the hammer and chisel to break up smaller pieces until you can get behind the wall, down to the studs, with your hands.

Grasp hold of the tile and mortar together and rock it back and forth until you can pull out a large chunk. If the tile and mortar combination is stuck, hit it with the hammer and chisel to help break it up and make it easier to remove. Continue pulling out large chunks of mortar and tile until the wall is down.

Hold the chisel at a degree angle to the tiles and tap with a hammer to break them up into pieces and clear a small section down to the drywall. Insert the end of a pry bar behind the tiles next to the area you cleared.

Apply pressure to pull the tiles off of the drywall. You may damage the drywall when doing this. If this is a large area, be prepared to replace the drywall as well. If it is a small area, like a backsplash, you can tile over the drywall, as long as there are no large holes. Continue pulling the tiles off with the pry bar. If a tile is stuck, free it with the hammer and chisel.
